BJTC Student Awards Information 2008-09
Details and entry requirements are as follows:
RADIO - there will be 2 categories - 1) Short Form - a news report of up to 90 seconds and 2) Long Form - a news-based feature of up to 3 minutes duration.
Entries on CD - but PLEASE tell us what format you've used - and should be accompanied by written cue and script and clear indication of intended programme/station output. Failure to provide relevant required documentation or to meet duration requirements will mean the entry will not be considered. Please also see GENERAL NOTES below.
TV - there will be 3 categories - 1) Short Form - a new report of up to 3 minutes duration but with a strong preference for 1'45". 2)Long Form - a news-based feature of between 3 and 9 minutes duration and 3) a news-based documentary to fit a slot matched by your stated intended programme output.
Entries must be on DVD - but PLEASE tell us what format you've used - accompanied by hard copy cues and scripts as a minimum, any other relevant paperwork you have and a clear indication of intended output. Failure to provide relevant required documentationor to meet realistic duration requirements for your stated output will mean the entry will not be cinsidered. Please also see GENERAL NOTES below.
NEW MEDIA - there will be 2 categories - 1) Multi-platform story - the most effective treatment of a single news story showing appreciation of the power of multi-media applications. This means TV, radio, online, and interactive. Entries should be made via a link to a live website and display good, strong text, clear signpposting, use of picture galleries, embedded audio and video and interactivity. Preference will be given to those who can demonstrate how the selected story can be developed for a 24-hour operation. This should be demonstrated by notes explaining how the story can be developed from 0600-2200, using video and audio reports, live inserts and graphic sequences.
2) Website - a news-based, live website, demonstrating a creative approach to design, structure, selection and treatment of stories and displaying all the online skills required to make the site attractive and informative, incluing appropriately edited audio, video, stills and graphics. Material must be original, suitable/relevant to its stated target editorial area/audience, able to create interactivity and draw a new audience back to the service it offers.
COLLEGE AWARDS - there will be 2 awards to courses - one for Innovation in teaching broadcast journalism and one for General Exellence in teaching broadcast journalism. Entries will be by not more than 2 pages of written application/evidence from the Course Leaders of accredited courses, summarising their case for either or both awards.
GENERAL NOTES - There are 2 deadlines - July 31 for standard academic year courses and November 30 for calendar year courses. Shortlisting will take place before Christmas and presentations are planned for early 2010. Details of the presentations will be published on this website and courses and student winners will be informed of the arrangements. Student entries MUST be of individual work - no shared or team entries will be considered - and sent to the BJTC Secretary, Jim Latham at 18 Miller's Close, Rippingale, Nr Bourne, Lincolnshire PE10 0TH by the relevant date. Any piece of work that in the opinion of the judges does not meet professional standards of balance, fairness, impartiality and accuracy and/or is legally or ethically dubious, will automatically be rejected, regardless of how good it is in other respects.
