We've been very grateful to GCap Media for sponsoring two categories (radio and TV) for the last three years but it's time to update, so there are big changes in the Student Awards this year.
Categories will now cover radio, TV and new media, with £500 prizes in each of seven sections.
The number of sponsors has risen to five - BBC, ITV News, Sky News, C4 and GCap Media and there'll be a completely new approach to the two awards made to colleges.
Details and entry requirements are as follows:
Radio
There will be two sections, both sponsored by GCap Media:
- Short Form - a news report of (up to) 90 seconds duration.
- Long Form - a news-based feature of (up to) 3 minutes duration.
Entries on mini-disk or CD (but no exotic formats please) and should be accompanied by a written cue and script and clear indication of intended programme/station output. Failure to provide relevant required documentation or to meet the duration requirements will mean the entry will not be considered. Please also see general notes below.
TV
There will be three sections:
- Short Form - a news report up to 3 minutes duration, but with a strong preference for 1' - 45", sponsored by ITV News Group (ING).
- Long Form - between 3 and 9 minutes duration, news-based feature, sponsored by the BBC.
- A current affairs feature of between 24 & 26 minutes duration sponsored by C4.
All entries must be on DVD (2 copies, no exotic formats please) accompanied by hard copy cues, scripts, shot lists, sync and comm., and a clear indication of intended output. Failure to provide relevant required documentation or to meet duration requirements will mean the entry will not be considered. Please also see general notes below.
New Media
There will be two sections:
- Multi-platform story - the most effective multi-platform treatment of a news story using as many as possible of video, audio, online, interactivity and text and any other medium thought applicable. Entries must include at least video and online - preference will be given to those displaying original thinking - and can be made via a live website, or DVD for video, Data CD or all three and must be accompanied by brief explanatory notes. Sponsored by Sky News.
- Website - a news-based, live website, demonstrating a creative approach to design, structure, selection and treatment of stories and displaying all the online skills required to make the site attractive and informative. It must have "talkability" and "usability" - material must be original, suitable/relevant to its target editorial area/audience, able to create interactivity and draw a new audience back to the service it offers. Sponsored by GCap Media.
College Awards
In the past, two trophies have gone to the courses producing the two winning student entries. They're engraved as "Awards for Excellence" and Council have decided to make them just that - one for Innovation in Broadcast Journalism training and the other for general Excellence in Broadcast Journalism training. Entries will be by not more than two pages of written application/evidence from the Course Leader of accredited courses summarising their case for either (or both) awards.
Winners and runners-up will be announced at the presentations. Each will receive a framed certificate (in addition to the winners' cash prizes). There are two deadlines - July 31 for standard academic year courses (September - June) and November 31 for calendar year courses. Short listing will take place before Christmas 2007 and presentations are planned for early 2008. Details of the ceremony will be published on the BJTC website and courses and students will be informed of the arrangements. Entries must be of individual work - no shared or team entries will be accepted - and sent to the BJTC Secretary, Jim Latham at 18 Miller's Close, Rippingale, Nr. Bourne, Lincs PE10 0TH by the relevant date. Please include home and work addresses, phone numbers and emails.
